This Trans Activist Is Getting Her Own Show

by Rachel Simon

It's safe to say that Jazz Jennings is having one amazing year. Not only was the 14-year-old transgender activist named one of Time's 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014, she wrote and released a book, was honored at the GLAAD Media Awards, and on Friday, it was revealed that Jennings will be getting a TLC reality show documenting her life as one of the most well-known transgender teenagers in the world.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, All That Jazz, an 11-episode docuseries set for a summer premiere, will follow the life of Jennings as she records her YouTube videos, fights for LGBT issues, and lives an otherwise normal teenage life. The show will also feature several of her family members, including her parents, siblings, and grandparents, all of whom have different approaches to Jennings' identity and activism.

"Jazz’s story is universal, yet unique, and we’re proud to partner with her family to share it with TLC’s audience," said TLC head Nancy Daniels.

It's a huge step for the network, and for trans representation on TV in general; currently, there are just a handful of shows that feature transgender stars, and even fewer in which the trans characters are teens. All That Jazz is groundbreaking TV, and hopefully, it'll shed light on and bring much-needed attention to LGBT issues, especially those that affect youth.

It's also, of course, great news for Jennings, who TLC hailed "The New Face of Transgender Youth." Here's what to know about the incredible teen:

She's No Stranger To TV

To promote LGBT awareness and discuss the complexities of growing up transgender, Jennings has appeared on several talk shows, including 20/20 and The Rosie Show. Speaking to Barbara Walters on 20/20, the then-12-year-old discussed her changed identity, her fears of puberty, and her desire to undergo therapy, all with a candor and maturity that made a huge impression on viewers.

She's A YouTube Sensation

To her 30,000 subscribers, Jennings shares everything from childhood videos to public speeches to fundraisers supporting transgender youth. Her most popular video, a demonstration of how to swim in one of the mermaid tails she created for the fundraiser, has nearly a million views.

She's A Published Author

In 2014, Jennings published I Am Jazz, a picture book co-written with Jessica Herthel based on her own life as a transgender child. The book received great reviews, with many praising Jennings for the bravery to tell her story and inspire others who may have been struggling with their own gender identities.

Last year, Jennings became the youngest person ever featured on The Advocate's 40 Under 40 list and the Out 100. Not bad for a girl not even old enough to get her license.
