A John Green Film Adaptation Guide

by Alyse Whitney

When it comes to Young Adult books, the unofficial king is John Green. The author's many best-selling novels have become cult hits and translated to the big screen — most notably tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars , starring Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley. That's far from the only book-to-film adaptation that he has under his belt, though, and you're probably questioning which John Green books are becoming movies.

It's hard to believe, but Green published his first book, Looking For Alaska , in 2005. In the past decade, his three other novels and two other co-authored books were never made into films, but now almost all of them are Hollywood-bound. Next up is Paper Towns with Nat Wolff (who was also in TFIOS) and Cara Delevingne, and the movie just had a big poster reveal. The first trailer is debuting on TODAY on March 19, which means fangirls around the world are about to burst into happy tears. To prepare you for all of the amazing movies to come, I've rounded up a status update of all of his adaptations. Hopefully we'll get a new book from Green soon — his last one was TFIOS in 2012 — because I think it's about time he gets a TV show, too.

Looking For Alaska (2005)

There haven't been any casting announcements yet, but Sarah Polley will direct the adaptation. The story of a troubled girl (Alaska Young) and a young boy (Miles) at boarding school tugs at your heartstrings and will be an interesting film. Josh Schwartz (creator of The O.C., Gossip Girl, and Hart of Dixie) penned the original script, but no word if his will be used in the final film.

An Abundance of Katherines (2006)

Although Green says the book was optioned to become a movie (with him penning the script), it was with a small production company and it fell through. Now they are "working with a different production company with the hopes of setting it up somewhere," but he doesn't expect the film to happen anytime soon. Maybe the main character, Colin — who happens to be a child prodigy — can solve all the problems.

Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances (2008)

Universal got the rights to Let It Snow — the collection of short stories about a small town's Christmas Eve snowstorm that he wrote with Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle — but there is no casting news yet.

Paper Towns (2008)

The story of Quentin (Nat Wolff) and Margo (Cara Delevingne) hits theaters on July 24. This is almost like a second TFIOS because the screenwriters (Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber) and one of the stars (Wolff) are the same. But the story is much different, chronicling a mysterious journey as Quentin tries to figure Margo out.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson (2010)

The book that Green and David Levithan wrote together won't become a movie yet. "WGWG has not been optioned," Green wrote on his site. "To quote a real live movie producer who really said this about Will Grayson, Will Grayson, 'The only thing Hollywood hates more than smart teenagers is smart, gay teenagers.' I hope Hollywood will prove this movie producer wrong someday." Us too, John. Us, too.

The Fault in Our Stars (2012)

TFIOS was a dream come true for fans of Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort) and Hazel Grace's (Shailene Woodley) sweet, yet tragic love story. The tale of two cancer-stricken teens still has everyone in the world crying, and it opened No. 1. at the box office in 2014.
