Good News for 'Goldbergs' & 'Trophy Wife'

by Alicia Lutes

Some days it feels like the major networks are listening to the little voices on the Internet — like today! ABC has given additional script orders to two of its freshman comedies, The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife. The house that Shonda built has decided to put a bit of faith behind its non-Rhimes series, giving three scripts apiece to the Malin Akerman/Bradley Whitford Trophy Wife and Wendi Mclendon-Covey fronted Goldbergs.

It's a good sign for the shows that are debuting against some other serious comedy stalwarts. Tuesday night comedy is seemingly dominated by FOX these days, what with New Girl, The Mindy Project, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine all on at the same time, to say nothing of the heavy-hitters of the night: NBC's The Voice, and CBS' NCIS franchises.

Ratings for both shows have been modest thus far, with Trophy Wife earning 4 million viewers, The Goldbergs earning 5 million. Compared to other ABC freshmen like the not-so-well-reviewed Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (7.7 million), it's easy to see where the concern lies.

But it's not all bad news, as the shows join a small pool of series to receive additional script orders, including FOX's Dads and the aforementioned Nine-Nine, as well as CW series Reign, Tomorrow People, and The Originals. The only series ABC has given a full season order to is S.H.I.E.L.D., so it's a promising sign for the series' continued expansion. Perhaps this news will get more people to tune in.
