Look Who's Starring In The 'Fraggle Rock' Movie!

by Nick Romano

The live-action movie you never knew you needed just received a boost: Fraggle Rock has cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt. But we know what you're thinking: "Wait! Hollywood is making a movie based on the TV series from the '80s? And it's in live-action? And, whoa, now my pretend boyfriend is starring in it?" Yes, yes and yes! A movie adaptation of Fraggle Rock has been in development for a while — more than a decade, actually. JGL's involvement means that things are finally starting to turn up roses for the production. Variety was the first to drop the news, and the trade also reports that the Looper actor and founder of HitRecord is also onboard as a producer.

"The first screen personas I ever loved were [Jim] Henson creations, first on Sesame Street, and then on Fraggle Rock," the 34-year-old heartthrob said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood."

"A young frisky man"? I like that. JGL may not have appeared in as many films as of late compared to a few years ago, but that's because he's been busy with his own stuff.

HitRecord is what he calls his "open collaboration production campaign," which is constantly looking for prospective filmmakers, animators, actors, artists, etc. to submit their work and get noticed on a large platform. However, he's returning to acting in playing Edward Snowden in Olive Stone's biopic, in addition to tight-rope walker Philippe Petit in The Walk, which chronicles the stuntman's famous walk between the Twin Towers in New York City.

Frankly, there's no better man better suited to headline a Fraggle Rock movie of any kind. The property first debuted on TV in 1985 and taught us all about life through that lovable band of puppets. Remember how catchy that theme song was?

JGL has the right mix of charm and childlike wonder to lead such a film. The only thing we can't quite figure out is just how exactly he'll be approaching this. Is it like the Smurfs, with CG lil' guys running around and a human cast? Or puppets? Will we see Doozers and Gorgs in this? Come what may, we're glad this dreamboat is the one taking us down this road.
