Who Are These Ladies Playing In 'Age Of Ultron'?

by Alanna Bennett

You can't just do this to me, Marvel: You can't just bust out two new (female) Avengers: Age Of Ultron cast members on April Fools Day, have it not be a joke and then not tell me who they're playing. But that's exactly what happened: Marvel confirmed Wednesday that Julie Delpy and Linda Cardellini are both among the cast members in Avengers: Age Of Ultron . That's right: Delpy and Cardellini have been confirmed, but there's no word on who they're playing. That said, this news does open up some pretty stellar options.

Delpy and Cadellini are both industry vets — Delpy for Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise/Before Midnight/Before Sunset films (as well has her own, very underrated film 2 Days In Paris), and Linda Cardellini for Freaks & Geeks, Mad Men, and, more recently, Netflix's Bloodline. That puts them in the position to be playing pretty much anyone in these films, from tiny one-off roles to huge, franchise-carrying ones. It's the latter that's already led the site Comic Book Movie to speculate that one of them could be playing the much anticipated Captain Marvel, aka, Carol Danvers.

My personal hope for Age Of Ultron has always been that it would include a scene or two introducing Carol to the Marvel universe, perhaps in her Air Force days. But while some rumors have supported that theory, more recent ones have seemed to debunk it. So, what's the truth? It's really a who knows, at this point. Personally, though, my leading theory would be that Carol will make her debut in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, closer to her solo movie and giving Marvel enough time to introduce the characters coming before her.

My hope for Carol Danvers, though, will live until that Age Of Ultron post-credits scene rolls, as will my very newfound interest in the possibility of Cardellini in the role.

But if one of these women is not playing Carol Danvers, who are they playing? One Twitter user pointed The Wasp out as an option for one of them, since Ant-Man is also fast approaching — and that theory gets bonus points considering Wasp was one of the founding members of the Avengers.

As much as I'm dying to know the answers, though, I'm OK at this point with Marvel offering up a few questions and surprises that won't be solved until Age of Ultron is released in May — it'll just be that much more shocking when their roles ultimately are revealed.
