Kelly Was Fat Shamed, Again

by Sienna Fantozzi

Being extremely talented, as well as a role model for young women, apparently isn't enough anymore. Chris Wallace fat shamed Kelly Clarkson, and I think it's high time the media stopped talking about her weight. Is this really the message we want to send to young girls?

Just after Clarkson opened up about body shaming on The Ellen Degeneres Show in an effort to promote body positivity, Wallace said some pretty tasteless comments during a radio interview. Host Mike Gallagher questioned: "Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up." To which Wallace replied:

"[Clarkson] could stay off the deep dish pizza for a while."

As could be expected, the Fox News anchor's comments sparked a well-deserved Internet backlash, with even his fellow Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren jumping to Kelly's defense on her blog. "This ‘guy snickering’ about her weight is obnoxious. He should apologize," Susteren said.

Though Wallace has publicly apologized to Clarkson, the statement is too little too late, in my opinion. As Kelly said herself, we are who we are, and we shouldn't have to all conform to be one size. Valuing entertainers by their size, rather than their talent, not only hurts them; it sends an extremely dangerous, destructive message to their fan base — both young and old.

You're a star, Kelly. Keep preaching that body positivity.
