What Everyone Thinks About the 'Fresh Prince' Song

by Rachel Semigran

I'd wager a John's Roast Pork that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 's theme song is one of the most memorable theme songs in television history. In fact, the entire opening credits are memorable, from Will Smith sitting on a throne as his life gets flipped, turned upside down to Will Smith being dumped on the front steps at the mansion that will transform him into the Prince of Bel-Air. I've been in bars in New York City, Los Angeles, and London where the Fresh Prince theme has been played, and people have rushed to scream the lyrics. It is as iconic as it is catchy. It brings every listener back to the neon high-topped glory of the 1990s and makes you want to get up and do your very best Carlton dance.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song isn't just a tune that is guaranteed to get stuck in your head for weeks on end. It's a visual time capsule of my generation's childhood — the fashion, the music, and, of course, the television. It's a story that brings everyone together because, in that moment, we are all West Philadelphia born and raised. On a playground is where we spent most of our days.
