5 Signs Your Vibrator Is Your Life Partner

by Aly Walansky

A vibrator is a must-have for your sex life. This remains true whether said vibrator is to supplement a partner — or to make pleasuring yourself a lot more interesting. You remember that first vibe you got. It was a little intimidating. You weren't sure quite what to do with it, and were kind of afraid of people seeing you buy it or know you had it. And then, you start to like it. A lot.

But then there's a time that comes that maybe you get a bit too close to your vibrator. You may choose to stay home in bed with our vibrator rather than going on a date. When having sex with ourselves gets in the place of relationships or meeting someone new, is it going too far? Maybe, maybe not — but it does mean you've grown pretty attached!

And self-soothing is totally fine as long as you're not using your vibrator become a band-aid for other emotional issues, says Katrina “Rainsong” Messenger.

There's a fine line we walk. Some of us have been known to travel with our vibrator at times (long, stressful business trips!) Others maybe have named our vibrators (it happens!) But if you are getting to the point that solo play is replacing partner play — or making partner play less exciting, you may have to consider you do have a new life partner. And your life partner is battery operated. No judgements!

1. You’ve Given It A Name

Naming something humanizes it, says Messenger. Naming your vibrator may indicate a certain amount of emotional attachment (extra points if you call the name out when you’re using it).

2. Your Interactions Have Become Routine

If your masturbation has become a choreographed ballet of specific techniques in the same order, it may be time to switch things up a bit. But don’t worry. Sexy toys don’t expect you to be monogamous, says Messenger.

3. You’ve Lost Interest In Reaching Orgasm Any Other Way

Vibrators deliver, it’s what they’re designed to do, but remember sex can be about much more than getting your rocks off, says Messenger. Find other ways to connect with yourself, like using your fingers.

4. There's Dirty Talk Involved

Obviously, with a partner, you're going to talk a little dirty. And you like it. If you start talking to your vibrator — beyond “Oh yes” and “More please," that's a red flag, says Jenny Block, author of O Wow: Discovering Your Ultimate Orgasm .

5. You Go Through A LOT Of Batteries

As in so much Costco batteries don't quite cut it, says Block. If you are using bulk quantities of batteries to power your habit, you are probably spending more than average time with your vibrator!
