These '90s Movies Should Never Be Rebooted

by Kaitlin Reilly

The world must have officially run out of original ideas because according to reports, '90s teen flick She's All That may be getting a reboot. The original film starred the most '90s actors ever Rachel Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. and told the story a shallow jock (Prinze Jr.) who makes a bet that he can transform the heinously unattractive art freak (played by the obviously beautiful Cook) into the prom queen. He succeeds, but not before he falls head-over-heels in love with her. I'm not totally sure I'm sold on the idea of a She's All That remake — after all, a '90s nerd is really just an '00s hipster — and the filmmakers will have to do some serious retooling in order to make this concept work. However, it's definitely not one of the few '90s movies that should never get a reboot, so there's definitely hope for it.

It's true: There are plenty of movies from the decade that would fail gloriously if made today, whether it's because the concept is hilariously outdated or because a reboot would ruin the nostalgic feel of the original.

Here are the movies that we should absolutely not redo because they were way too perfect in their prime.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

I adore The Sixth Sense and have no problem with re-watching it despite knowing the epic twist ending, but let's be honest — the twist is the best part. That means that this film can go wrong in two ways: it can copy the twist from the original, or create a new, wholly unsatisfying one to keep audiences guessing. I would be OK with neither of these things.

Scream (1996)

Scream is easily one of my favorite movies, and I dragged all of my friends to the theater to see the super-meta Scre4m when it came out in 2011. I enjoyed it, but it definitely lost the charm it had in the '90s when the killer had to rely on battery-operated voice distorters as opposed to a voice distorter app. MTV is already giving us a Scream television series, so let's not push another movie out there until we're certain it can say something new.

The Lion King (1994)

For all I know, this could already be in the works over at Disney — sometimes it seems like it's their ultimate goal to remake every animated film into a live-action film. But seriously, don't do us like that, Disney!

Forrest Gump (1994)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got close enough as it is — and the line "Momma says life is like a box of chocolates" would sound incredibly strange coming from anyone other than Tom Hanks' mouth.

Home Alone (1990)

In the modern world, leaving a child alone in their house over Christmas is inexcusable... OK, really, wasn't it always?

The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)

It's a near-perfect movie, and we already have a near-perfect TV show in Hannibal. Why mess with a classic?

American Beauty (1999)

Stick to the original — it may be heavy handed, but it's still gorgeous. Sometimes nothing's better than the real thing.
