How Does The Vision Fit Into 'The Avengers 2'?

by Nick Romano

We've seen a lot of The Avengers: Age of Ultron already, including Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver, Robert Downey Jr.'s Hulkbuster armor and James Spader's villainous Ultron. But one thing Marvel has kept close to the vest is The Vision's full look in The Avengers: Age of Ultron ...until now, that is. Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first full look at the character through four collectible magazine covers, and he looks incredible.

Portrayed by Paul Bettany, The Vision is the fourth major new character entering the superhero film's universe, and his presentation seems pretty faithful to the original concept. His design and colors will surely please diehard fans of the comics, while his origins have been updated to fit nicely into the films. The Vision is originally a product of Hank Pym (aka Ant-Man), but the movie has been forced to change the storyline to better fit with the plot — so here, he's the creation of Ultron.

Based on details to go along with the issue of EW, here's his birth in a nutshell: Remember that Captain America: The Winter Soldier post-credits scene that revealed Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? That Hydra guy is called Baron von Strucker, and he's been conducting dangerous experiments, one of which gave the twins their abilities. Stark will encounter his technology in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and use Strucker's advances combined with his own to create an advanced form of artificial intelligence. That would be Ultron. When Ultron goes crazy, he destroys J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark's A.I. helper from the past films, and rebuilds him into The Vision, a super-powered robot. Sounds intense!

We caught a glimpse of what The Vision will look like in the film in the trailers, but here's a full look:

And here he is standing alongside his fellow Avengers.

What's interesting about The Vision is that he's a member of The Avengers — the same goes for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. So while they all might fight with Ultron against Earth's Mightiest Heroes, they'll all likely switch sides at some point. Marvel fans will also know that The Vision develops relationship with Scarlet Witch in the comics. While it's unclear how much Age of Ultron will play up this point, Bettany revealed at Comic-Con that his character is very "protective" of her. I hear church bells!

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit theaters on May 1.
