Shailene Woodley Uses Beet Juice As Lipstick

by Jamie Cuccinelli

Shailene Woodley may not totally get the definition of feminism (I'm still not that, guys), but there are plenty of reasons to admire her. The actress recently shared her eco-friendly beauty tips with Bon Appetit magazine guess what? Shailene Woodley wears beet lipstick! Yeah, that's lipstick made from beets. As in, the vegetable?

Does anyone else remember that really great cartoon called As Told by Ginger that ran on Nickelodeon back in the day? It was an early aughts TV staple and featured an episode where the titular character and her middle school friends try to cheat her mom's "no makeup" rule by concocting blush, lipstick, and eyeshadow from the food in her fridge. It sounds like Woodley totally stole a page out of the old Nicktoons playbook with her veggie-enhanced beauty routine. "Beets are amazing," Woodley revealed, according to Us Weekly. "If you roast them you'll get a better lipstick." Sorry Shailene, but Ginger thought of it first!

But no matter where the actress got the idea, you gotta admit that it's pretty cool and really convenient that you don't have to run out to the nearest MAC counter to score the Insurgent star's berry-hued pout. You can get your lipstick fix with what you have on hand right now. "I roast [the beets] first and then just dab a little of the juice on my lips with my finger," Woodley explained. And there you have it — a movie star-approved lippy that you can re-create on the cheap.

Beet lipstick isn't the only DIY makeup trick hiding out in your fridge. Check out these other eco-friendly, all-natural recipes for quick, easy, and CHEAP makeup that's probably already lurking in your kitchen. I promise you won't look like you just spread vegetables on your face (and it'll be a lot more glam than just eating a cherry popsicle).

Tea Cheek Stain

For a pretty, brownish-rose tint to your cheeks (which also smells bangin' by the way), simply pour a half tablespoon of boiling water over two teaspoons of dried hibiscus tea (available at many grocery stores and all tea supply stores). Dip a cotton ball into the tea and dab and blend onto your cheeks.

Homemade Bronzer

This one requires a few more ingredients, but how cool would it be to tell people you got that beachy, cinnamon-hued glow with actual cinnamon. Combine one tablespoon of cinnamon, a teaspoon of cocoa powder, one teaspoon of nutmeg, two teaspoons of cornstarch, and 15 drops of an essential oil of your choice. The amounts of each ingredient can be adjusted according to your skin tone.

Kool Aid Lip Gloss

Ugh, the 12-year-old in me is squealing right now. All you need for this baby is a jar of petroleum jelly and a few packets of your favorite Kool Aid color or flavor. Add a tablespoon of petroleum jelly to each packet of Kool Aid you're using. Microwave the mixture for 15 seconds, stir, and than heat again until it's totally liquified and the Kool Aid has completely dissolved. Pour the concoction into an empty lip gloss container, let it cool and set for a few hours, and then relive your childhood while getting ready for work in the morning.

DIY Makeup Setting Spray

Probably one of the most expensive beauty products that I regularly buy is my makeup setting spray from Urban Decay. If you're putting yourself on a beauty budget, this DIY copycat is a fantastic alternative. Shake two teaspoons of vegetable glycerin, filtered water, and two drops of lavender essential oil together in a spray bottle. Mist, and you're good to go.
