What Should Hillary Clinton's Campaign Song Be?

by Loretta Donelan

Now that Hillary Clinton has announced her campaign for presidency, it's time to get started on her most important campaign decision: choosing a campaign song. Since Americans have proven time and time again that they are less swayed by platforms and ideology in favor of rhetoric and emotion, I think candidates should spend a lot of time deciding on their campaign song. Despite my opinions, potential candidates have picked some pretty unfortunate songs over the years — though there have been a couple of good ones. Which leads me to wonder: What should Hillary Clinton's campaign song be?

Of course, a candidate's campaign song choice is a deeply important one. Back in 2008 when she first ran for presidency, Clinton chose Celine Dion's "You And I." This time, however, Clinton needs a song that makes a major statement — one that completely and utterly defines her campaign.

There are already two contenders for Clinton 2016: One is a country anthem called "Stand With Hillary," which features lyrics like "This great lady/Carin’ hard workin’/Once a First Lady/She fights for country and my family." This is entirely off-brand, however, and I honestly hope it's not a real thing or the ultimate choice for the campaign. The other more plausible possibility is Katy Perry's "Roar": Last year, Perry tweeted at Clinton that she would write a campaign song for her, and Clinton replied that she had already written one, "Roar." While this sort of makes sense, and I can imagine the song playing at a rally, I think there's a better option out there. Also, the song has such a "zero to hero" message, and Clinton has certainly never been a zero.

So, here are a few alternatives with a little more to say:

"Flawless" by Beyoncé

"Took some time to live my life/But don't think I'm just his little wife/Don't get it twisted, get it twisted/This my shit, bow down bitches"

OK, so this song has a bit of profanity in it, but come on — it's just as flawless as Clinton herself is, so I can dream. If Clinton built her whole campaign around the feminist declaration "flawless," I would be so happy.

"Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett

"A girl can do what she wants to do and that's what I'm gonna do/ An' I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation/Oh no, not me."

This would obviously be tongue-in-cheek, something Clinton does well.

"Changes" by David Bowie

"Where's your shame/You've left us up to our necks in it/Time may change me/But you can't trace time"

Also tongue-in-cheek, as the "changes" could refer to her economic platform and electing a female president.

"One Day" by Matisyahu

"One day this all will change/Treat people the same/Stop with the violence/Down with the hate."

If Clinton were to stress her humanitarian concerns, "One Day" would be a bold, inspiring choice.

"Control" by Janet Jackson

"This is a story about control/My control/Control of what I say/Control of what I do/And this time/I'm gonna do it my way (my way)/I hope you enjoy this as much as I do."

This would be such a great nod to Clinton haters.

"My Time" by Fabolous ft. Jeremih

"It's been a few years, now it's me, about time/You know I got committed with it since I've been up in the zone/Sign the dotted line, now it's on/So y'all better check your wrist-piece/Cause it's time to make history"

LOL, OK, maybe not. But think about it... it is her time.

"Fly" by Nicki Minaj and Rihanna

"Everybody wanna try to box me in/Suffocating every time it locks me in/Painting their own pictures then they crop me in/But I will remain where the top begins"

Is there anything more inspiring? No? I rest my case.
