This Is How Much Politicians Spend On Clothes

Beyond campaign trails, speeches and policies, the wardrobes of politicians are pretty impressive. Most of the time, its First Ladies making the headlines with their impeccable ball gowns and suits (Michelle Obama, much?). Nevertheless, the men put plenty of effort into their appearances as well, with some digging deeper in their pockets than others.

For example, John Edwards spent $400 on a haircut once and sent the country into a frenzy.

The same occurred when Sarah Palin ran for vice president. It was reported that the Republican National Committee spent $150,000 on Palin's wardrobe alone during her campaign trail. Most of the items came from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, which many argued didn't do much to align her with the public, many of which couldn't afford such luxuries.

In stark contrast, President Barack Obama only pays $21 for his haircut, however, that price comes attached with the travel costs to fly his barber from Chicago to Washington D.C. And although his wife, Michelle Obama, is often noted for her sense of personal style, wearing brands from J. Crew to Zac Posen, the White House isn't quick to share how much is allocated toward her amazing wardrobe.

Even before these politicians, world leaders were making statements with their style and beauty. According to Forbes, Queen Hatshepsut became the first female pharoah and often wore a beard and men's kilts. Another moment in history notes that Thomas Jefferson had a strange affinity toward hair powder, once writing that it was a necessity. It seems that politicians understand the power of appearances — and they aren't afraid to spend some cash in order to look their best.
