We, as a society, have been waiting for the return of Game of Thrones for what feels like a million winters. Finally the time has come, and it wouldn't be a long-awaited premiere of Game of Thrones if Saturday Night Live didn't parody the TV show with a new and amazing kingdom. It was Game of Thrones meets Boyz n the Hood — called South Centros — and it now has to become a spinoff on HBO, because it was just that good.
The sketch involved familial drama, murders via bow and arrow, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, star of Game of Thrones. I don't think anyone in the audience even noticed Coster-Waldau, but even if that was the case, it is worth watching just to see Jaime Lannister throw up a peace sign. It also featured a rarely seen Michael Che, who hilariously ranted about the length of the Game of Thrones series, because we all love the show and books, but damn it's long.
Overall the sketch was a solid representation of what would happen if John Singleton created a branch of Game of Thrones. We'd hear things like "Ray Ray Baratheon says 'Good morrow, wench!'" (delivered by the always on point Leslie Jones), and see things like a threatening drive-by on a horse where Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson) would scare away Jaime Lannister by revealing his sword under his cloak. What I'm trying to get at is that we really deserve a John Singleton's Game of Thrones to happen.
The only thing missing from this skit was SNL host Taraji P. Henson. Where was she? Henson was in the skit for a moment, but like the Game of Thrones books, this sketch was long and Henson's appearance was over in the blink of an eye. I wanted to see her throw some amazing Cookie shade! I guess I shouldn't complain, because as the skit says, "Don't hate the slayer... hate the game."
