Charli XCX Channels Josie & The Pussycats

by Lia Beck

If you thought Fall Out Boy was going to be the only performer at the MTV Movie Awards, oooh were you wrong. Taking the stage with only a half-hour left in the show, Charli XCX, Tinashe, and Ty Dolla channeled Josie and the Pussycats with a performance that was equal parts cartoonish and sexually explicit. But really, would you expect anything else from Charli XCX. I mean, the girl dresses like the sixth Spice Girl on a regular basis. This was TOTALLY up her alley.

To start the performance, Charlie XCX came out with a giant inflatable guitar and wearing a tiger striped bodysuit. And around her was a band dressed similarly funky. And everything around them was bright pink. It was a visual assault on the senses and a nostalgic one at that.

After their first song, Charlie, along with Tinashe and Ty Dolla, moved on to a song called "Drop That Kitty," which, you guessed it, is an innuendo. This means that in addition to plenty of pelvic thrusting, we also got an entire line of kitty backup dancers who were dressed in pink cat outfits. Trust me, this thing really was A LOT to take in.

If you didn't check out the performance as it happened, allow me to give you a visual comparison.

Whether you were a fan of the cartoon Josie and the Pussycats...

Or the 2001 film version...

It's undeniable that Charli and crew were really into the Pussycats look

Yep, that couldn't have been an accident. Check the performance below:
