Coachella's Style Lessons Keep On Giving

by Tyler Atwood

In what feels like the blink of an eye, bitter temperatures and icy snowstorms have given way to the warm winds and tepid weather that signify musical festival season. And what better way to kick off the festivities than with a trip to Palm Springs for Coachella? After all, there's nothing like a little Coachella street style to get you extra ready for the impending warm weather.

The Southern California celebration commenced last weekend with its customary crowd of hipsters, celebrities, and those select few true music devotees. Though the opening acts have changed over the years and the weather migrates between overwhelmingly stifling and murky, the sartorial dexterity of attendees has remained unchanged. Where else can coveted wares from Chloe's Spring 2015 collection be seen mingling with vintage apparel so on-trend it appears to have been plucked from the pages of Vogue? The bands and solo performers onstage are only half of the story at Coachella, and innovative ensembles constitute the remaining entertainment. Unless you consistently sit front row at Fashion Week, there is no better locale to watch and learn from fashion's most free-spirited risk-takers. Take out your memo pad, uncap your pen, and get ready to take notes on these 10 lessons we learned from Coachella: Weekend One this year.

1. Hints Of Skin Are In

Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley demonstrated the supreme power of strategic hints of skin in a white eyelet Chloe shift dress.

2. Persimmon Is Having A Moment

Blogger Julie Sariñana of Sincerely Jules appeared luminous and on-trend in a persimmon crochet shift dress, embodying both spring's '70s trend and the innate style of a pop color.

3. Go Bohemian Or Go Home

When in Coachella, do as the Coachella attendees do and select a transparent, voluminous, filmy tunic a la Alexa Chung.

4. A Floral Maxi Dress Is A Forever Piece

Stylist Rachel Zoe took center stage sartorially in a printed maxi dress, proving once again that maxi dresses aren't on the way out anytime soon.

5. Never Underestimate The Power Of A Straw Hat

Kelly Framel of The Glamourai demonstrated sun safety and insouciant allure in a straw hat and tie-dye ensemble.

6. A Striped Tee Is Fashion Gold

Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad threw on her LST (Little Striped Tee) and a mini skirt for an ensemble as physically cool and breezy as it was figuratively speaking.

7. Clothing Is In Fact Optional...But Only On Festival Grounds

As Kendall Jenner so kindly illustrated, bikinis are considered legitimate items of clothing at Coachella; however, once attendees leave festival grounds, all bets are off.

8. The '70s Are Back, Baby

If the Spring 2015 runways, editorial spreads, and high street clothing company offerings haven't yet convinced you, perhaps Coachella's attendees will: '70s style has returned with a vengeance. Blogger Aimee Song of Song of Style commenced Coachella in dusty gladiator sandals and a bell-sleeved blouse, demonstrating exactly how to channel the trend without venturing into staid, stuffy territory.

9. You Can Never Go Wrong With A White Monochrome Ensemble In Spring

Take a page out of Kat Collings' book, and invest in a white monochrome ensemble immediately before venturing into Summer 2015.

10. Embrace Your Inner Eccentric With Patterns And Pastels

Katy Perry's pastel, printed crop top and a-line mini skirt were proof positive that the coming season will embrace individuality and innovative — even if the resulting ensemble is mere inches shy of twee.

11. Earth Tones Are A Perpetual Fashion Win

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland's earth-toned suede ensemble nearly stole the spotlight from model Gigi Hadid, confirming once again that earth tones are never an unsuitable sartorial choice.
