4 Swoon-Worthy MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss Winners

by Tracy Dye

Of all the stars winning golden popcorn at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, few shone quite as brightly as Shailene Woodley, whose film The Fault in our Stars won Best Movie. Woodley's heart-wrenching take on the character of Hazel in TFIOS also earned her a trophy for Best Female Performance, and she even took home the coveted (and super deserved) Trailblazer Award, for being a true trailblazer in the industry and basically one of the most awesome people ever. Finally, Woodley and TFIOS costar Ansel Elgort were honored with the ever-regaled (and anticipated) Best Kiss Award. Sadly, Elgort wasn't on hand to take the stage with Woodley and accept the award. Nevertheless, Shai managed just fine on her own, infusing her short and sweet speech with a little humor by saying, "[Ansel] wishes he could be here. He's busy doing a movie. But if you ever wondered what it's like to kiss your brother, it's kind of great."

I never thought that kind of statement could be made without being super cringe-worthy, but Woodley is a woman of many talents. We only wish we could have seen the adorableness that was sure to ensue had Elgort been able to attend! Speaking of adorableness, there's been a ton of that over the years per recipients of the Best Kiss award. Some of them have (dare I say it) arguably trumped Elgort and Woodley with their awkwardly amorous speeches. Now, to be fair, Woodley was left to her own devices in this instance, but just for fun, let's look back at four Best Kiss winners who made our hearts (or at least mine) pitter patter with delight.

Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling (2005)

I usually like to save the best for last (and, trust me, it doesn't get better than this), but I simply can't resist diving back into heart-melting nostalgia with this one. In 2005, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling won Best Kiss for The Notebook because of course they did. As if giving us the gift of their blazing on-screen chemistry wasn't enough, these two gorgeous people blessed us with a reenactment of one of their iconic rain-soaked kissing scene where Gosling lifts McAdams into his arms and kisses her with the passion of TEN Goslings! I. Love. It.

Julia Stiles & Sean Patrick Thomas (2001)

In 2001, Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas pulled at our heartstrings in Save the Last Dance with a romance that faced a plethora of bias and opposition. Their chemistry earned them a Best Kiss trophy that same year, and the actors couldn't have been more adorable. After offering standard thanks, the two looked at each other with bashful hesitation before engaging in a sweet smooch that led to more than a few hoots and hollers.

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson (2011)

Remember that time Twilight won, like, every single MTV Movie Award? If memory serves me correctly, it was pretty much during the entirety of that franchise. In 2011, after costars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson had already won the coveted golden popcorn approximately 10,000 times (that figure is greatly exaggerated), fans waited with bated breath to see the two celebrate with some of that smoldering Bella/Edward love. Much to everyone's surprise (and delight), Pattinson decided he was going to relegate a smooch to "someone who would appreciate it a little more", and took his bromance with Twilight costar Taylor Lautner to the next level by planting one on everyone's favorite shirtless werewolf. Ow, ow!

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson (2010)

Ok, I know that I just got done talking about these two, but the aforementioned kiss actually involved Pattinson and Lautner, not Stewart. When Pattinson and Stewart won the previous year, the two used their acceptance speech to engage in what might be one of the most adorably awkward things I had seen during that time. There was a lot of giggling, playful shoving and what I think was an actual kiss at the end. Either way, it just goes to show you that being goofy can also be romantic. Heck, that's pretty much my dating life in a nutshell.

Happy swooning, everybody!
