'Wonder Woman's Michelle MacLaren Exits

by Anna Klassen

It's bad news for the world of DC female superheroes. Wonder Woman's Michelle MacLaren has exited as the film's director, according to The Wrap. The film, starring Gal Gadot in the titular character, is part of Warner Bros. plans to launch an expanded superhero universe with DC comics. The Wonder Woman character will be introduced in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The director, whose previous work includes Breaking Bad, is leaving the film due to "creative differences." A representative from Warner Bros. offered this statement:

“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together."

Her exit is disappointing on several levels. We're sad to see a woman as talented as MacLaren exit the directing role, given how critically slammed Man of Steel was received. Her previous work includes some of the best television on TV today, including Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, and Better Call Saul. Her name attached to the project was a ray of hope that the substance and style presented in Wonder Woman could top Man of Steel. Now, we're not so sure.

Not only does her credits merit our tears, but the fact that a female director is exiting has us wondering who will replace her. Specifically, if a woman will take her place. It only seems fair that a film about Wonder Woman be directed by a, well, wondrous woman, and we hope Warner Bros. and DC will find a female of equal talent to take her place.

Wonder Woman is slated to hit theaters in 2017.
