See What People In 1939 Thought We'd Be Wearing

Have you ever wondered what our grandmothers must have assumed we’d be wearing here in 2015? We now have an answer, thanks to a video from1939 called "Clothing of the Future" that, yes, predicts what clothing would look like in the 21st century. And yes, most of the styles sport space suit-esque trinkets that don’t actually make a lot of sense, but evidently serve some purpose, i.e. an atmospheric battery powered belt to help us breathe (and connects in no way to the actual mouth of its wearer).

The video (whether authentic or not, who really ever knows) purports to have solicited the topmost fashion designers to help blueprint some designs based on their idea of the future, which is questionable at best. One of the most hilarious ensembles? A dress that goes from day to night by adding some Jetsons-style shoulder pads and layers. Another? Mesh. Mesh was the invention of the time’s most influential designers. “Transparent net” is how they refer to a dress of the envisioned material in the video. In the name of modesty, they also added some swirly boob cones a la Madonna circa 1990. Also of note? Pants
