It's Time To Start Planning Memorial Day Weekend

by Cecily Trowbridge

As far as ushering in the start of summer goes, Memorial Day activities can't be beat. Similar to most holidays originally intended to commemorate or celebrate, Memorial Day has become a time to barbecue, drink in excess, and partake of the very activities those who the holiday remembers have solidified our ability to participate in — what better reason to party?

Of course, it’s important to remember the true meaning behind this holiday, and there are adventures to be had on Memorial Day that shed light on the great people who have served to protect us. But Memorial Day also means an extended weekend, with a whole lot of time to cut loose and get a head start on your jam-packed summer bucket list. And with three whole days to fill, it's time to start planning your weekend now. You don't have to go on a crazy weekend road trip or plan a getaway to the closest beach to have fun (although if you do, we're not going to stop you!). So whether your ultimate jam is a relaxing weekend by the pool, a fun-filled outdoors excursion, or a jaunt over to your nearest Memorial celebration to give thanks, the following ideas will satisfy your Memorial Day plan-making jitters, and help you hone in on your ultimate three-day weekend.

1. Learn a new water sport on the lake

Wake boarding may look terrifying, but it's amazingly fun. However, do not let the board fool you. It is not like it is on the snow.

2. Camp under the stars with your friends

Memorial Day is the optimum excuse to get away from the blitz and craziness, and to get some much-needed relaxation in the great outdoors.

3. Spend time with loved ones who have served

Take the time to be proud of those people in your life who have made such a selfless choice.

4. Make festive jello shots with ridiculous alcohol content

Not particularly original, but everyone's favorite way to celebrate nonetheless.

5. Learn about your family's military history

These are questions we never really know we have until the people who can answer them aren't around anymore. Not to be a downer, but take the opportunity. You won't regret it.

6. Road trip for the most badass fireworks show within 50 miles

For some reason, sitting on that beach being illuminated by a few quality explosions in the sky is one of the most calming experiences humanity knows.

7. Take a silent moment to be thankful for the freedoms we have

Because someone really did give their life for this.
