The Boston Marathon Is Today

by Jenny Hollander

Two years after the devastating bombing that killed three and injured hundreds more, the 2015 Boston Marathon is scheduled to begin Monday morning. 30,000 runners are expected to participate in the 26.2 mile race, with another roughly 30,000 observing; the race stretches from Hopkinton to just outside the Boston Library, where the finish line has been placed. Starting 9.30 am. ET, you can watch the race live here. (The Boston Globe has put together a great interactive map, which you can see here.)

On the official marathon website, organizer Boston Athletic Association has posted a timeline of exactly when each group will begin the race, along with how many members of each category will be participating.

Mobility Impaired 8:50 a.m. 50 Push-Rim Wheelchair 9:17 a.m. 70 (plus 6 duos) Handcycles 9:22 a.m. 18 Elite Women 9:32 a.m. 40 Elite Men and Wave One 10:00 a.m. 7,500 Wave Two 10:25 a.m. 7,500 Wave Three 10:50 a.m. 7,500 Wave Four 11:15 a.m. 7,500

According to The Washington Post, strict security protocols for the marathon were put in place following the 2013 bombing, and few of those rules have been relaxed for 2015. Unlike previous years, you categorically have to be a registered runner to participate; large backpacks, packages, and large bottles of water (carrying more than a liter of liquid) aren't allowed; security will be going through bags at the race.

ESPN reports that the Boston Marathon generally ends at about 6 p.m.; "that's when we give up," writes Bill Simmons in "Idiot's Guide To The Boston Marathon."
