Pantone's Newest Color Is Minion Yellow

by Stephanie Chon

It’s official: The color yellow has a new member added to its bright and lively family. According to the Pantone Color Institute, Minion Yellow is the newest yellow in town. It’s described as, “an illuminating, energetic, friendly and fun-loving yellow shade that immediately calls out to you.” I wonder if it calls out in the tune of my favorite minion song. You know, the one that goes, “Ba-na-na-na-na-na-na!”

If anything, I’m sure it calls out with a Pharrell Wlliams song because not only did he help create the soundtrack for Despicable Me , but he also helped birth the the idea for this new, adorable, bright pale shade of yellow. The Pantone team worked closely with Illumination Entertainment on this now iconic color, which isn’t just any old yellow.

According to the Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, this specific shade of yellow was created to invoke a certain type of emotion. Eiseman said, "Just as the sun’s rays enliven us, PANTONE Minion Yellow is a color that heightens awareness and creates clarity, lighting the way to the intelligence, originality and the resourcefulness of an open mind – this is the color of hope, joy and optimism.” Wow!

Minion Yellow was created just in time for the upcoming movie, Minions , which will be out in theaters on July 10th. Not only is it the first color to be added by Pantone in three years, according to cnet, it's also the first ever to be inspired by a character. Go Minions!
