A $25 Million Diamond To Be Auctioned At Sotheby's

by Melanie Richtman

On April 21, a 100-carat emerald cut diamond is going up for auction at Sotheby's New York and they believe the 100-carat gem could go for $25 million. This diamond is unlike any other diamond ever held at the auction house. It features a D color and is internally flawless—a classification that is extremely rare, especially among larger diamonds. So what does this mean for the average person? This diamond is big, pretty, and, let's face it, a little bit ostentatious.

This giant gem is the primary piece in the Magnificent Jewels collection at Sotheby's, which has traveled to six different cities including Dubai, London and Hong Kong, and also features other precious pieces, including some Art Deco Cartier jewels and some Harry Winston sapphires. The auction on April 21, 2015 features over 350 pieces and is predicted to generate over $50 million in sales.

"People everywhere have been drawn to it from across the room and they are in awe of its size, particularly when they put it on their hand," said Sotheby's head of the New York jewelry department Gary Schuler. "They can't believe there's a diamond this pure of such impressive scale."

Frankly, I don't care how impressive this giant jewel is by its technical qualifications, it's pretty obnoxious. But the real question is: Is is obnoxious enough that Kanye West would consider bidding on it? I think it's time Kim Kardashian gets a ring upgrade, and this could be just the diamond. However, my roommate would like to point out that West does not have the net worth to responsibly purchase this diamond. But I would like to point out that he is Kanye West and he can do what he wants. However, realistically, this 100-carat flawless diamond will probably be bought anonymously.
