A Third Season for 'House of Cards'?

If you were wondering if Netflix is planning ahead, the answer is yes: Netflix is in talks for House of Cards Season 3 right now. For those keeping track at home, Season 2 hasn't even been released yet. But Netflix wants House of Cards, and they want it bad.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos mentioned Netflix's undying love for their chief political drama during a keynote address at the 2013 Film Independent Forum this weekend, saying that “Our intent is that the show keep going for sure ... It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.”

He told Deadline later that talks are in progress right now for third season contracts — and that's bound to be interesting, seeing as Sarandos' assertion that a third season is happening goes a little bit in direct opposition of what Rick Cleveland (the show's co-executive producer) said just a few weeks ago. Which was, to paraphrase, that the show would only run two.

“House of Cards is only going to go a second season and I think that’s it,” is what Cleveland specifically said. When pressed as to the reason for that relatively short and decisive run, he said that it was because both Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright — two of the show's big stars — both want to continue on with their film careers, and filming a series gets in the way of that.

So how are these two very different outlooks on House of Cards' runtime going to resolve themselves? Well, considering Netflix isn't bound to the traditional television schedules that most networks are, probably with some creative scheduling.

Oh, and piles of cash. Piles and piles of cash.
