Kimye Will Be At The Nerd Prom In Spirit Only

by Kayla Hawkins

Like it or not, Kimye is a real power couple, and it means something when they show up somewhere. They were both at the Time 100 Gala, celebrating Time Magazine's 100 most influential people, but will Kim Kardashian and Kanye West be at the White House Correspondents' Dinner? The Dinner isn't until the evening of Saturday, Apr. 25, so there's plenty of time for the Kardashi-Wests to make the trip if they so choose, but it's a lot of events in a short period of time, and you can't break the government by showing up in a revealing outfit, so I don't think it's going to be their highest priority. I would have expected an Instagram tease, an indecipherable Tweet from Kanye, and a full on press release in advance of the dinner were they planning to attend.

But regardless of whether Kanye dons his best pair of leather sweatpants for the occasion, we do know that Kimye will be in attendance in one way... as the punchlines for every single joke Cecily Strong (the host!) makes at the expense of Hollywood, celebrities behaving badly, butt-mania, or people with silly names. Seriously, they may be America's most mocked couple of all time, and they've only been married for what, a year? If these two aren't mentioned at least a dozen times, both credit to the writers for resisting the low-hanging fruit, and also shame on the writers for missing a million opportunities for picking some low-hanging fruit. It's happened in years past; in fact, in 2012, even Obama had Kardashian jokes:

Seriously, guys, what am I doing here? I'm the President of the United States, and I'm opening for Jimmy Kimmel? Why am I telling knock-knock jokes to Kim Kardashian? What is she famous for, anyway?

Kim has attended the Correspondents' Dinner before, and has been a part of the invite list since at least 2012. It's a part of the overall glamorization of the event, which once stuck much closer to its nerdy roots, but now could be mistaken for an awards show. But just like the Golden Globes proves every year, journalists are easily overshadowed by famous faces. And once an event starts inviting tabloid stars, it can only invite more tabloid stars. So let Kim and Kanye attend the show. It's their right! And they're going to be joked about regardless, and then we can see their reactions rather than cutting to John Boehner pretending to understand what a North West reference means.

But alas, I don't really think it will happen. No news site nor gossip site has gotten ahold of an RSVP from them, and it seems like they're still in NYC. Kim posted a series of photos out to dinner with Kanye at the Polo Bar, filled with Kim's friends and owner Ralph Lauren.

It's rude not to RSVP and gatecrash an event this big. Then again, if anyone would do that, it'd be Kim Kardashian. And if anyone else would join her, RSVP be damned, it would be Kanye. So even though it's pretty unlikely that Kimye will be at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, you just never know.
