'The Selection' Movie Could Be Coming to Screens

by Caitlin White

This really shouldn't be a surprise to us fans, because we've practically made seen the films in our mind. But here's the news: Warner Bros. has won the movie rights to Kiera Cass' The Selection. Which means we could be seeing Prince Maxon, America Singer, Marlee, Aspen, and all the rest in the theaters, and I know, try to contain yourselves. This news comes right before the next edition of Cass' series is released. Currently Cass' Selection series has three novels — The Selection, The Elite, and The One — but in May comes The Heir, which restarts the Selection process with another candidate, and it will be followed by at least one more book.

Cass' series follows downtrodden America Singer as she (unwillingly, at times) vies for the affection of Prince Maxon in a The Bachelor-style televised competition across her dystopian world. America is randomly selected for the opportunity, and is pulled from her poorer life to live in the castle for the duration of the competition for the right to become Queen. There's a wrinkle of course: America's true love Aspen is also in the castle, assigned to the royal guard. And she begins to find out not only truths about the other women, who will do anything to win, but about her world as a whole.

See? Perfect for a movie.

The Heir follows a new protagonist, America's daughter, through the selection process. It is set to release May 5.

Black List writer Katie Lovejoy has signed on to pen the script for The Selection movie. And it will be produced by DiNovi Pictures, a production company that is no stranger to book-to-movie adaptations. It's behind the movie versions of Nicholas Sparks' The Best of Me and The Lucky One (you know, the one you watched for Zac Efron's abs), Gayle Forman' If I Stay , and Ann Brashares' The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, among others.

This isn't the first time production companies have been competing to get their hands on The Selection. The book was made into two TV pilots by the CW, starring Friday Night Lights' Aimee Teegarden and Jane the Virgin's Yael Grobglas, respectively in 2012 and 2013. Cross your fingers this time we get to see America on the big screen.
