'Walking Dead' Really Is Unkillable

by Alanna Bennett

Well, duh. AMC's The Walking Dead has been renewed for a fifth season in a move that absolutely anybody with even vague knowledge of The Walking Dead knew was coming. At least we'll get to continue to gaze upon Andrew Lincoln's face?

But yeah, it's official: More zombie apocalypse, more grit and gore, and while we're at it, probably more of the unnecessary killing off of female characters who lived a hell of a lot longer in the comics.

AMC president Charlie Collier called the renewal ”one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever," which... yeah. The Walking Dead isn't exactly in in strug-town when it comes to ratings, even with the dip that came with Season 4 — not to mention the critical dings that have been following the show's third and fourth seasons.

Still, AMC's not exactly ready to let the show go. As Collier noted:

This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently — and most notably — with the Season 4 premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.

As for if more behind-the-scenes creative shakeups will take place in the show's now-sure fifth season, the show will retain its executive producers in Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse, as well as showrunner Scott Gimple.
