9 '90s Prom Dresses That Still Look Great Today

by Hayli Goode

After the stress of promposals and midterms are gone, the only thing left to worry about is what to wear to prom. And because TV shows, movies, and Twitter posts have never lied to us, all those amazing '90s prom dresses are a great place to start for inspiration. Even if you already have a gown lined up, it's worth grabbing some popcorn and queuing these prom flicks up on Netflix.

When I was going to my first prom, my mom got major enjoyment out of sitting myself and my then-boyfriend down to take us through a complete history of her first prom. Twice. She made us listen to her first prom story twice. With pictures. It was embarrassing, but he still ended up taking me, so whatever.

As humiliated as I was at the time, I remember not being mad at her dress. Though it was totally outdated, I actually loved its vintage feel. I didn't say it out loud at the time, but I wish she had saved it so I could save money by wearing hers. Unfortunately, it was long gone — but you can learn from my mistake. If you have an older sister or friend who went to prom in the '90s, they probably wore a pretty sweet dress. If you're lucky, they might let even let you borrow it. In the meantime, drool over these nine iconic '90s prom gowns from movies, TV, and real life.

1. Courtney from Jawbreaker

She had an unfortunate ending, but at least she looked great.

2. Kimmy Gibbler from Full House

Girl wore a tight-fitting, leopard dress to prom, complete with red nails, which she appropriately used to eat hors d'oeuvres. #PromGoals

3. Joey Potter from Dawson's Creek

OK, this was technically 2000, but I'll let it slide because an all-black dress will never go out of style.

4. Flowers

This is totally '90s and I'm totally in love with it. Slip dresses FTW.

5. Bianca from 10 Things I Hate About You

I can name at least ten things I love about this crop top and tulle dress.

6. Sparkle Everything

Yes! This is bold and sparkly and beautiful and everything.

7. Off-The Shoulder

It's like '90s Prom Barbie. In the best way.

8. Taylor Vaughan from She's All That

Well, this particular girl isn't "all that," but her gold dress definitely is.

9. Black Sequins

And if a black dress never goes out of style, than a black sequin dress is definitely timeless.
