Elena's Exit Takes A Big Step Forward On 'TVD'

Well this plot twist just got very exciting. During Thursday night's Vampire Diaries episode "Because," Lily gave Elena the cure to vampirism, thinking it would serve as a punishment to Damon when he failed to retrieve the Ascendant from Bonnie. That by itself is a pretty big pill to swallow. No pun intended. (Seriously, though, have you seen that cure pill? It's huge!) However, TVD decided to up the ante one step further by having Damon reveal that he wants to take the cure with Elena, so that they can both become human and live out the rest of their days together. And while that is without a doubt a very sweet sentiment, is that something that is even possible?

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm all for anything that would allow Delena to remain together forever and ever. But I thought the cure could only be taken by one person at a time. If they were allowed to split it, then that would've made the initial race to the cure a lot less exciting since they could've all just taken a sip and been done with it. So what exactly are the writers playing at here? I suppose they could always use the Ascendant to retrieve the cure from the 1903 prison world for Damon. But they'd have to get through Bonnie first to do it. And given her recent reaction to a very similar request, I'd say they'd have their work cut out for them.

Oh, and let's not forget about that whole fun aging thing that happened to Katherine when she took the cure. Wouldn't the same thing happen to Damon since he's technically 174 years old? We can't have him dying on us. Not when there's so many more baths to take and bourbon to drink.

So as wonderful of a sentiment as this idea is, I highly doubt it will ever come to pass. First of all, unlike Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder has no plans to leave the show. (That we know of, at least.) So with Damon's TVD future clearly solidified, I can't see how they can both take the cure and then somehow explain away Elena's absence in future seasons. It's just not feasible. Which means, in typical Mystic Falls fashion, something is bound to go wrong. (*Insert dramatic gasp here*)

It's such a wonderful storyline to consider. Which makes it also too good to be true. Elena may eventually get that loft in Tribeca, a surgical residency, and two kids she's been hoping for. But unfortunately, I just don't think Damon will be apart of it.
