What Happens When Ava DuVernay Meets Barbie?

by Loretta Donelan

In an awesomely feminist move, Mattel released Barbie dolls honoring six women, including director Ava DuVernay, whom they have awarded the title "sheroes." The exceptional, inspirational women — including DuVernay, Shameless actress Emmy Rossum, Eva Chen, Kristin Chenoweth, Sydney Keiser, and Trisha Yearwood — were chosen for, according to Indiewire, "breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere." The women were also honored at the Variety Power of Women Luncheon in NYC on Friday, and the best part: In addition to DuVernay, each woman received her own, one-of-a-kind Barbie, modeled in her likeness.

These women are all in the entertainment industry, and many of them have some sort of cause or political bent. They are also a diverse group of women with broad appeal and a range of talents, so it's great that Mattel is honoring them. Sadly, the Barbies don't seem to be available to the public — but, honestly, they should be, who wouldn't want an Ava DuVernay Barbie, or an Emmy Rossum Barbie? Exactly. Everyone would want one, and it would be an instant bestseller. Just sayin', Mattel!

If you're not familiar with any of these ladies, don't fret — no better time to get to know them than the present. But first, here's a look at all the dolls, together:

Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay is the director of Selma, among other award-winning films. Her work centers on important themes dealing with race and politics, and she has been outspoken about the difficulty of being a black female director in Hollywood.

Emmy Rossum

You might recognize her from The Phantom of the Opera or Shameless, but Rossum is also an active philanthropist whose focus has been on animal rights and environmentalism.
