Kim Kardashian Supports Bruce Jenner On 'Today'

by Chelsea Mize

Following his courageous interview with Diane Sawyer in which he officially stated that he is "for all intents and purposes... a woman," Bruce Jenner has received an outpouring of support from friends and family, other celebrities, and the general public. Given the prominent role of the Jenner/Kardashian family in the public eye, many quickly turned to Bruce's family to see how they would respond to Bruce's interview. And now, after showing her support for Bruce on social media, Kim Kardashian supported Bruce Jenner during a Today interview on Saturday.

In an interview with Matt Lauer — which will air in full on Monday on Today — Kim Kardashian spoke out about Bruce Jenner's interview, and his reveal that he is, in his words, "for all intents and purposes... a woman." In a sneak peek of Kim's interview with Lauer that aired during "Weekend Today" on Saturday, Kim stated, "I think there is still an adjustment and there's, you know, family therapy... Is it a hard adjustment? Yes." Kim went on to explain how, although the family is still adjusting to Bruce's courageous decision to share his story on 20/20, the family is unwavering in their support of him.

It is inspiring to see such a strong system of love and support endure within a family, and hopefully the Jenner/Kardashian family serves as inspiration for those who struggle with their gender identity.

The Jenner/Kardashian family is always a much talked about subject in the media, and, with their level of fame, rumors and speculation abound. Kim talked about how difficult it is to see false reports in the media:

I see reports that say, you know, 'This one doesn't support him,' and, 'This one's over here,' and my mom, 'feels this way.' And it's all really so made up. We all really support him.

During his 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Bruce said that Kim was the first one of his daughters to know about his gender identity, after she discovered him wearing female clothing. Bruce also said that Kim has become his biggest supporter through this process, after a conversation with her husband, Kanye West. Jenner revealed that Kanye helped Kim to better understand her stepfather's struggle, claiming that Kanye told Kim:

I could be married to the most beautiful woman in the world. And I am. I could have the most beautiful little daughter in the world. I have that. I'm nothing if I can't be me. If I can't be true to myself, they don't mean anything.

With Kanye's help, Kim has become Bruce's biggest cheerleader and the person who he is most comfortable talking to about his transition.

Though the Kardashian/Jenner family receives more than their fair share of criticism, they have persevered and evolved to become more than a famous family. They have become emblematic of unconditional love and courage, with their overwhelming support of Bruce's story, setting a standard which I hope other families who have LGBTQ family members will exemplify.

Hopefully, Jenner's fearless decision to make his story public, along with his family's unwavering support, will help those struggling with gender identity.

Here are just a few of the heartwarming words from Bruce's family shared after his groundbreaking 20/20 interview.

Editor’s Note: Per Jenner’s stated preference, Bustle will continue referring to Jenner using he/his pronouns for the time being. We will follow his lead and make any changes to this policy as needed in the future.
