'Super Troopers 2' Is Officially Happening

by Sofia Barrett-Ibarria

This is a historic moment in movie crowdfunding history. Super Troopers is getting a sequel, all thanks to over 50,000 fans of the 2001 cult classic comedy who contributed to the Indiegogo campaign to make Super Troopers 2 happen. Variety reports that Broken Lizard comedy troupe's campaign earnings come second only to the $5.7 million record set by the Kickstarter campaign to create a Veronica Mars movie back in 2013. The fundraising campaign for Super Troopers 2 reportedly "met its initial goal in 26 hours [and...] assured that the sequel would indeed go into production this coming summer." Cinema Blend reports. Incentives for contributing reportedly included "a producer title for $10,000, a speaking actor role for $10,000, a trip to the ballpark with the main actors for $15,000 and the patrol car to be used in the filming for $35,000," as well as a $20,000 "Best Men" incentive that promised “all five members of Broken Lizard will attend your wedding and act as your groomsmen (or bridesmaids)."

Excitement for the sequel has reportedly been percolating for some time. "There was always a flirtation with the idea of a sequel," Cinema Blend reports, "but never a guarantee" until director Jay Chandrasekhar confirmed the launch of a fundraising campaign. Original cast members Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske will reportedly reunite as "the quintet play goofy Vermont state troopers with a penchant for pranks and feuding with other local law enforcement officers."
