Viola Davis Has An Important New Role

by Kaitlin Reilly

It's a rare day when I see a part that I believe Viola Davis isn't capable of playing extraordinarily well, but her new role in this HBO film could be one of the best of her career. Viola Davis is in talks to star as Harriet Tubman in HBO's new telepic and it's a career move I only wish could have come sooner. The new film, penned by the screenwriter behind the John Adams mini-series Kirk Ellis, will focus on Tubman's activism for civil rights of enslaved people and the creation of the Underground Railroad. The screenplay is based on the book Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman: Portrait of an American Hero by Kate Clifford Larson and has yet to set a date for production.

As amazing as the new role sounds for Davis, I can't be the only one thinking that it could potentially interfere with Davis' turn as Annalise Keating on ABC's How To Get Away With Murder. Waiting for the new season of the series, which is scheduled to return this fall, is hard enough to stomach as is. Luckily, The Hollywood Reporter states that the new Tubman biopic is planning on shooting while Davis is on a production hiatus from the series, which means that we'll be getting even more Davis — not less. Who could complain about that?
