Joni Mitchell Reportedly In A Coma — UPDATE

by Lia Beck

Update: According to her representative Leslie Morris, Joni Mitchell is thankfully responsive and, as her rep said in a statement, "not in a coma." As USA Today reports, the statement was posted on Mitchell's official website, and reads:

Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital - but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital. As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight. Please continue to keep Joni in your thoughts. You may add your well wishes for her at the website WeLoveYouJoni.com.

Previous: Unfortunately, it sounds like there's a sad update for Joni Mitchell. According to TMZ, Joni Mitchell is in a coma and "unresponsive." As the site reports, the iconic singer is "unconscious in a hospital, unable to respond to anyone, with no immediate prospects for getting better."

On March 31, Mitchell was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in her home. A statement posted on JoniMitchell.com at the time, read,

Joni was found unconscious in her home this afternoon. She regained consciousness on the ambulance ride to an L.A. area hospital. She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them. Light a candle and sing a song, let’s all send good wishes her way.

Things sounded much better at that point, but now it seems Mitchell has taken a turn for the worst; although currently, details are unavailable so it's hard to know how much her current state is related to the previous incident.

The last update on the website is from April 3 and reads,

Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably. We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day.

We will update as more information comes in.
