What Do Prosecutors Think Happened To Gray?

This week, riots reached fever point in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray, who passed away April 19 from injuries sustained while he was in police custody. So, what exactly happened to Freddie Gray? On Friday, after a week of protests both violent and nonviolent in Baltimore and other major U.S. cities, Baltimore's state's attorney Marilyn Mosby announced that the state would be filing criminal charges against the six officers involved, with the charges ranging from assault to manslaughter to second-degree murder.

Here's what we know, according to Baltimore prosecutors: Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 while carrying a knife, in an arrest Mosby later deemed illegal. Gray was placed into a police van, which contained six officers, and according to Mosby was cuffed but not offered the use of a seatbelt. (This is in violation of police procedure.) At some point during the van's journey, Gray sustained a spinal injury and the officers did not seek medical assistance. It's thought that his head may have slammed into the side of the van, according to a report by a local ABC affiliate.

In the weeks after Gray's death, Baltimore erupted into protests that turned violent on the day of Freddie Gray's funeral, with many demanding answers as to what exactly happened in the back of that police van. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of all six officers.
