Please Let Bret McKenzie's NASA Comedy Be Musical

by Alicia Lutes

So New Zealand funnyman and one-half of Flight of the Conchords (never forget) super-duo, Bret McKenzie is creating an animated workplace comedy for FOX. Which is great because there's never enough funny people on that shiny little black box that shouts funny stuff at me when I press a button. Also because people who are more than happy to call themselves kiwis deserve far more airtime than they currently receive (nicknaming oneself after a fruit and also an extremely goofy-looking flightless bird is a surefire sign that your sense of humor is aces). It's also great because — gasp of all gasps — we might just be able to needle a couple more musical hilarities out of the man.

Indeed, most well-known for being a half of the aforementioned Conchords with Jemaine Clement, McKenzie has also been dabbling on his own on the music front, having penned the Oscar-winning (tut tut!) songs of 2011's The Muppets. The untitled show is said to be set in Boulder, Colorado at an old NASA outpost. And apparently, McKenzie may also possibly voice a character. So, obviously, we're going to need a few musical interludes in a show about outer space. Because there's so much to sing about — whistle while you work, as the saying goes! — so naturally, the possibilities are truly (wait for it/I'm sorry) out of this world.

We realize that McKenzie is no doubt a busy man, so we've decided to come up with a few song ideas of our own — to help nebulize the intergalactic possibilities of such sonic shenanigans (cue self-satisfied laughter). Like...

  • "Don't Angstrom Me!"
  • "I'm A Lunartic"
  • "Asteroid Rage"
  • "You've Got a Black Hole-d on Me"
  • "Comet Get It"
  • "You're My Gamma Ray"
  • "If You're Feeling Gibbous"
  • "Put Your Head On My Higgs Boson"
  • "The Gravity of the Situation"
  • "That's Meteorite with Me!"
  • "You Are a Radiant Quasar"
  • "You're Seyfert Out There"
  • "Syzygy, Syzygy, Syzygy"
  • "Get Umbra My Supernova"

I mean, clearly: it's going to be a show worth getting animated about.
