Your Guide to Spending Halloween Night In

by Caroline Pate

Halloween is nothing if not exciting. But that kind of excitement isn't for everyone. Maybe you're an introvert. Maybe you don't like huge crowds, drunk college kids, or whining children. Maybe blood and guts freak you out (even the fake ones). Maybe you don't get the hype. Maybe you have important things to do tomorrow. Maybe you don't enjoy ritual sacrifice. And you know what? That's totally cool. You do you, babe. But just because you stay in doesn't mean you can't have fun. Need some ideas to get you started? We've got you covered no matter what kind of night in you want to have.

For the Scaredy Cat

There's not a huge Halloween market for those who don't like blood and gore, unless you're in the under-10 set. But there is one place you can go for Halloween-themed entertainment minus the spooks: television. Use our handy guide to find some of the best Halloween nights on TV, open up a bottle of wine (because what's a night in without one?), and hang out with some of the funniest people on television. Because really, why would you go out when you can watch Parks and Recreation with a bottle of pinot?

For the B-Movie Junkie

There's a million articles debating the best horror movies in the genre: Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Scream? Psycho or The Shining? But what about the movies that were never that great in the first place? One of the best parts of Halloween is the inexhaustible amount of terrible horror movies available for you to watch: Cat People, Nightmare in Wax, Mystics in Bali, I Spit on Your Grave, A Bucket of Blood, Carnival of Souls...and that's not even counting newer flicks like Leprechaun and Teeth. Gather up a few friends, buy some novelty Halloween candy from the drugstore, rent a few horror B-movies and you'll be set. Just prepared for moments like these:

For the Living Embodiment of Buzzfeed

We know, you're nostalgic, you miss being a kid in the '90s. Life is hard. But you don't have to leave the good ol' days behind forever. Throw an old-fashioned, Halloween-themed slumber party with some good friends. Break out the Ouija board, play "light as a feather, stiff as a board," snack on popcorn balls and candy corn, and marathon spooky '90s kids shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps. Just make sure you don't get too spooked and have to call Mom...you don't want to revert to a childlike state entirely.

For the Foodie

Reliving your childhood may be fun, but adulthood has its benefits, too. You don't need to go around begging for candy anymore like a tiny diabetic homeless person when you can just make your own damn treats. Or, if you want to get even more adult, have your own mini-Oktoberfest in-house. Just grab bunch of craft beers from your favorite fancy grocery store (make sure at least one of them is a pumpkin ale for maximum Halloween vibes) and have your own beer tasting. You can invite friends and make a small party of it, or not...that just means more beer for you.
