Book Suggestions for Newsmakers

It's been a week of big news around the world. We've got a few book recommendations for headline makers when they have a chance to read up.

Sir Patrick Stewart was a lobster for Halloween, and it was brilliant and adorable. But as Slate pointed out, his red costume reflects the color of the crustacean after it's dead, so he's technically dressed as a "zombie lobster." Whatever. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly's lecture, "Proactive Policing in America's Biggest City" was canceled at Brown University after 30 minutes of protests and objections from students and members of Dare Action for Racial Equality. Brown University President Christina Paxson issued a statement, promising to apologize to Kelly for the "disrespectful" behavior of the protesters. Paxson and Kelly, y'all should read this op-ed by current Brown student Doreen St. Felix, entitled "The only thing 'uncivilised' about Ray Kelly's talk at Brown was inviting him." And then, once you've regained your sensibilities, read Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow.
