Gap Will Open A Store In India This Month

by Eliza Florendo

Gap Inc., has certainly been expanding and growing over the course of their lifetime, from their humble beginnings in 1969, to becoming an international retailer covering everyday basics, to work staples and even athletic wear. And they don't seem to be slowing down—Gap is set to open their first store in India at the end of May.

The Select CityWalk mall in Delhi will house the 10,000 square foot flagship store, according to WWD. And over the course of the next five years, the company plans on opening 40 Gap stores, "with about five to seven stores in the first financial year ending March 31, 2016," chief executive officer of the Gap Business at Arvind Lifestyle Brands Limited Oliver Kaye told WWD.

While most brands are priced higher in India, Kaye said that pricing would be similar to that of Gap in the U.S. As for the merchandise, items on sale will match those of other stores around the world, so a customer would be able to find the same items in India as they would in the U.S. or London.

Kaye told WWD, “There is huge recognition for the brand and I think it will do phenomenally well in India." And according to Kaye, there's been excitement building around the grand opening, as the population is already familiar with their merchandise. And to promote their opening? Advertising, social media, and outdoor media are taking the reins.

Gap isn't the only one that's caught word of the growth of the Indian shopping market—Zara, Mango, and Forever21 have all opened in the past few years. “I think the market couldn’t be more ready for the Gap," Kaye told WWD.
