The Weird Inspiration For Her Elle Cover

Almost a month has passed since Melissa McCarthy's controversial Elle cover was released, but people are still talking about about it — the magazine star being one of them. During a recent appearance on Jay Leno, McCarthy confessed the unusual inspiration she drew for her cover girl look.

"I kind of wanted to look like the walk of shame," McCarthy told the late night talk show host. Although somewhat strange, Leno understood where she was coming from, saying, "To guys, that's just got out of bed look, which is very sexy."

We appreciate McCarthy's humor and her lighthearted attitude about the entire situation. Even in the face of critics who accused her of not standing up for plus-size women, McCarthy handled the controversy with class, saying she chose to wear the coat on the cover of Elle. (And why not? It was a beautiful coat!)

"What I found so bizarre is I picked the coat. I grabbed the coat. I covered up. I had a great black dress on but I thought, 'It comes out in November.' I was so sick of summer. I live in Southern California. I was like, 'Give me a big coat to wear. Give the girl some cashmere!" McCarthy told Leno.

McCarthy's only gripe with her Elle cover shoot was why she wasn't allowed to keep the Marina Rinaldi coat.
