The Best 'Mother's Day' Songs To Listen To

by Tracy Dye

Although we have a day marked on our calendars each year to shower our respective mothers with gifts and praise, let's face it: everyday is a day that these fantastic women should be celebrated. Still, it is nice to have a time set aside for us to amp up the love and appreciation with Mother's Day, a dedication to moms everywhere. I honestly have no words for just how amazingly awesome all you moms are out there and — as a writer — words are kind of my thing, so rendering me speechless says a lot.

While many of our greatest hits in music have been dedicated to romantic events, breakups, makeups, and the like, several artists set aside some of their most touching ballads to pay accolades to the most important women in their lives — their moms! Yes, The Lonely Island is featured on this list (I had to, guys, I had to) for some good old-fashioned lulz, but for the most part, these songs are truly heartwarming, and may even have you reaching for the tissue box. Let's take a look at 11 of the best songs dedicated to moms and offer a resounding "Happy Mother's Day!" to all the wonderful mothers out there.

Carrie Underwood, "Mama's Song"

Make sure you have the tissues close by while listening to this super sweet ballad Carrie Underwood dedicates to her mother. So. Many. Feels.

Christina Aguilera, "Oh Mother"

As if we needed another reason to praise Christina Aguilera, this powerful ballad is as heart-wrenching as it is inspiring. Aguilera has often spoken of her love and admiration for her mother, who left an abusive relationship with Aguilera's father and moved the family to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

The Lonely Island, "Mother Lover"

This one is decidedly less sentimental than some of the other songs on this list, but I had to include it. Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg hatch a plan to cure each other's moms of their respective loneliness. I'll let you watch the video for the full exposition, but with lines like "Imma be the syrup, she can be my waffle," I think you get the point — #lulz.

Spice Girls, "Mama"

Our favorite '90s girl band (spice up your life — am I right?!) paid tribute to their mothers, and the realization we all come to about why our moms were "so unfair" etc. during our more rebellious years.

Boyz II Men, "A Song For Mama"

The '90s quartet known as Boyz II Men took a break from breakup ballads and seductive tracks to thank their mothers with this touching song from 1997.

Justin Bieber, "Turn To You"

I know some people have mixed feelings about Justin Bieber, but if anything can remind us of why we labeled ourselves "Beliebers," it's this sweet song.

Kanye West, "Hey Mama"

For all his controversy and — at times — questionable commentary, it is truly impossible to not pay Kanye West accolades for this amazing tribute to his late mother, Donda West. A definite tearjerker, West's lyric "last night I saw you in my dreams and now I can't wait to go to sleep" truly resonates.

Backstreet Boys, "The Perfect Fan"

We know that the Backstreet Boys think all their fans are "Larger Than Life," but with "The Perfect Fan," one of our favorite '90s and early 2000s quintets paid tribute to their mothers in the sweetest of ways, garnering more than a few "aww's". Well done, guys!

Drake, "Look What You've Done"

With all his international fame and fandom, Drake still shows that "family first" is one of his many inspiring mantras in "Look What You've Done." Listen all the way through to hear a sweet voicemail from Drake's grandmother, which concludes the track.

*NSYNC, "(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You"

If you're like me, you pretended that every member of *NSYNC was singing about their unbridled romantic love for you. Personally, I pretend that with every *NSYNC song, as well as the subsequent hits from Justin Timberlake. They're not singing about me (whatever, it's cool), and based on the video for "(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time On You" the boys were actually singing about their love and appreciation for their moms, making the song all the more sweet and touching.

2Pac, "Dear Mama"

The late Tupac Shakur rapped about his love for his mother, and the struggles she endured as a single mother on welfare. Shakur repeats the line "you are appreciated" throughout the poignant track.
