Bethenny Tried To Fix Sonja's Problems On 'RHONY'

by Laura Rosenfeld

Reality shows are often about ridiculous, over-the-top drama, but sometimes they get really real, yo. That was the case during Tuesday night's episode of The Real Housewives of New York City . When it looked like all of the Housewives were too fed up with Sonja Morgan's shenanigans to deal with her, Bethenny Frankel stepped in to try and get her to acknowledge her problems. Unfortunately, Sonja was too busy talking to notice.

Since Sonja joined the RHONY cast in Season 3, she has been portrayed as one of the hardest partiers of the group. It's not an episode of RHONY unless Sonja is either completely wasted or she flashes the camera, usually both.

However, it appears that Sonja's drinking has caught up with her in recent seasons, or at least that's how the show has portrayed it. Sonja has gone from crazy cougar to someone who may be using alcohol to mask some real, deep, dark issues.

Bethenny seems to be one of Sonja's only allies this season of RHONY. She even seems closer to her than her former best gal pal Ramona Singer, if you can believe that. Bethenny is the only Housewife Sonja invited to check out her work-in-progress clothing line during last Tuesday night's episode. Bethenny calmed Sonja down and encouraged her to apologize to Heather Thomson to ease the tension in the limo on the way to Atlantic City. Even though the two got into a bit of a heated argument during their first night in AC after Bethenny laid down some truth about Sonja's business ambitions, this actually worked to make Bethenny more concerned about Sonja's mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

So after a night when Sonja and Ramona went all Turtle Time on the other Housewives and hard, Bethenny sat down for a heartfelt one-on-one with Sonja. She told Sonja that the pain she is feeling from her divorce and going through all of her financial troubles may be causing her to hit the bottle a little too hard, especially if she's on medication to help with her anxiety at the same time. Bethenny suggested that she needs to let the past go and talk with someone so that she can move on with her life.

This was definitely solid advice from Bethenny, who knows a thing or two about what Sonja is going through. Though Bethenny may seem cool and tough on RHONY, she's actually living a nightmare, going through a very nasty and very public divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband, which brings with it a load of financial and emotional issues. Bethenny may not be 100 percent OK, but she's dealing with it all and living life.

Unfortunately, Sonja wasn't hearing any of this. That's probably because every 12 seconds, she would interject with some excuse about how her doctors are looking into how her "vitamins" react to alcohol or that she's waiting to be finished with everything having to do with filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy before she starts dating.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey, Sonja. Nobody said anything about dating. Bethenny said it best when she quipped to Sonja, "You have to have a relationship with yourself first." Preach.

Sonja's constant talking and trying to put a spin on the situation was Bethenny's biggest gripe with her during Tuesday night's episode. It's just another example of Sonja living in a fantasy land filled with denial about what's really going on. In fact, Sonja failed to see the similarities between her situation and what Bethenny is currently going through at all, which just blew my mind.

I hate to say it, but maybe the other Housewives were right for giving up on Sonja. She may be a lost cause after all.
