Lupita's Cannes Opening Night Dress Is Perfection

by Rosie Narasaki

Buckle your seat belts, because Lupita Nyong'o has officially a rrived at Cannes. She's been on everybody's mind lately, as the first images of her doing motion capture work for Star Wars: The Force Awakens were recently revealed in Vanity Fair — and now she's making her near-legendary red carpet presence known.

When it comes to the dress, it's kind of the perfect mash-up of all of her most fashionable moments, ever: It's green and voluminous, like the mermaid-y Dior she wore to the 2014 BAFTAs (though this new number is slightly paler — as she said on her Instagram caption, it's "#grasshoppergreen"), it's got a majorly twirl-worthy princess skirt à la her infamous Prada 2014 Academy Awards gown, and while it's not a full-on cape, it's definitely got some cape-like action, like her 2014 Golden Globes dress. Oh, and it's got some absolutely gorgeous floral detailing, which is a nice callback to her infamous turquoise SAG Awards showstopper! Basically, this new dress is all the things, and as such, it's glorious.

Of course, it wouldn't be a look worthy of Ms. Lupita if the styling wasn't absolutely on point to match — she paired the green number with a surprisingly spring-appropriate purple lipstick, ultra-dramatic bejeweled drop earrings, and a double-stranded crystal headband. Let's take a look!
