Yes, 'Crimson Peak's Trailer Is Freaky

by Nick Romano

Have you all calmed down from seeing Tom Hiddleston in the new Crimson Peak trailer? Yeah, yeah... neither have I. But there's more to this trailer than Loki getting it on with Alice in Wonderland's Alice. Lots more! Guillermo del Toro, the horror, fantasy and sci-fi master who directed Pan's Labyrinth and Pacific Rim, is back with a horror story. As seen in the Crimson Peak trailer, the film stars Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, and the man with the bubble butt of steel, aka Charlie Hunnam, in one of the freakiest haunted houses ever. Everything is gothic/victorian/couture/fantastical, but underneath the beauty of the visual effects, costumes and, ahem, actors is our most highly anticipated creep-fest of the year.

A young woman named Edith (Wasikowska) is swept up in a romance with a handsome man named Sir Thomas Sharpe (obviously, Hiddleston), and she goes away to live with him and his sister (Chastain) in a mansion on top of a mountain of blood-red clay. Every relationship has a honeymoon phase, but when this one ends, the woman realizes that this house is filled with ghosts and that her lover may not be who he appears to be. Yikes!

The full-length Crimson Peak trailer may only be two-and-a-half minutes, but it already has its hooks in me. Watch it below.

Now, here are the freakiest moments from the footage.

1. "Beware Of Crimson Peak."

It all comes back to the house known as Crimson Peak — and I'm pretty sure one of my nightmares took place here. It always blows my mind that people choose to live in places like this, even if the situation is fictional. Rule number one to surviving a haunted house movie is to leave the haunted house before stuff gets real!

2. Check Your Pipes

Maybe it has something to do with all the blood-colored clay that the mountain is made of, but this is some The Shining business right here. Wasikowska's character should have left after seeing this, but then, of course, there'd be no movie.

3. Should We Acknowledge The Ghost In The Room?

Edith has always known about ghosts. She has seen them everywhere. Maybe she's off her meds or something — I don't know, I'm not a doctor or a supernatural occult expert. Perhaps seeing figures swaying in rays of sun is normal for her, but for me, this is some freaky stuff.

4. That Blood-Red Clay

Are we sure that's clay? Like, really sure? Considering the snowfall, the house and the blood color littering the ground, this is almost like a direct nod to Stephen King.

5. Out Of The Woodwork

Whoomp! There it is. The demons are awake, and they're coming for Edith. You can tell that this is a del Toro film by how gangly and horrific this phantom is. Run, girl, ruuuun!

6. You Can Run, But You Can't Hide

Shame on Edith. Don't you know ghosts can walk through walls? That's like horror movie 101 material. There's no place she can hide in this house where she'll be safe.

7. Um...Could You Not?

When Edith got together with Sir Thomas Sharpe, she probably had some others ideas as to what would be keeping her up at night. And this black, bony hand grasping her shoulder should was not it.
