Loki Makes Bad Look Oh So Good

by Nick Romano

It's a fact of life, basically. As Loki, Tom Hiddleston makes bad look oh so good. Since debuting as the God of Mischief in 2011's Thor, he's become something of an international sensation. Maybe it's that British accent, maybe it's that devilish smile, maybe it's the fact that he could probably charm the pants off of anyone, anywhere, anytime — but the world just can't get enough of Thor's mischievous, adopted brother.

Loki was also featured prominently in Marvel's The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World , and all the while his fans have remained faithful. He even almost popped up in a cameo appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron , but the footage was seen as superfluous, and cut out for the theatrical release. I know, it's a travesty — but he'll return again for Thor: Raganarok, the third installment of the solo Thor movies, that will see the end of days come to the Nine Realms. It'll pick up directly after the end of Age of Ultron — and, given Hiddleston's involvement, Thor's bulging biceps are not the only things we're all looking forward to seeing.

It's kind of crazy how Loki, arguably the most infamous villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, became such a heartthrob to the point where he even gets cheers from people at Comic Con. But, as Loki fans, we of course have just cause for our love.

His Smile

No matter what kind of evil activity he's perpetrating, all he has to do to earn my forgiveness is flash those pearly whites of his. The problem with that is that he (1) does it frequently and (2) it's super effective, so I'm constantly rooting for him to destroy Thor and the Avengers. This is not what Marvel wanted, I'm sure.

His Sass

Ultron had some snarky remarks, but Loki is the master of the backhanded compliment, backdoor bragging, and just straight-up sassafras. That's why his enemies hate him so much — he's so fabulous.

His Swag

Whether it's his Asgardian armor or his snazzy suit and tie combo (plus that scarf!), Loki has the most sartorial game of any Marvel character. Yes, that includes Tony Stark on his best day.

All His Scenes Are Gold

Loki gave us so many incredible moments over the years, whether it was getting tossed around by Hulk like a "puny god," ransacking New York City with his Chitauri army, or making fun of his golden-haired brother for his stupidity. I need to see what he'll bring to Thor: Ragnarok, like, now.

He Gets Under Your Skin

Though he doesn't have any mind-manipulating powers like Scarlet Witch, he enjoys using his words to get inside peoples' heads. Black Widow knew this, and she used it to her advantage when interrogating him in the S.H.I.E.L.D. hellicarrier. It's a great quality to have for a villain. He's gotten into our heads.

We are his loyal followers.

He's Three Steps Ahead Of Everyone

Thor has the muscle, but Loki has the brains — after all, that hand-chopping thing in Thor: The Dark World was his idea. The Mjolnir wielder has his strengths (his looks, especially) but outsmarting his opponents is not one of them.

He Has A Way With Words

Loki has given the world so much, and his Shakespearian speak is at the very top of the list.
