'Wayward Pines' Gets 10 Episodes, Is That Enough?

by Chrissa Hardy

The creepiest stories are the ones that take place in the prettiest places, because any sinister activity would be unexpected. That's what makes Fox's new show, Wayward Pines (premiering Thursday!) such a spectacular nightmare. Billed as a limited series, Wayward Pines will air 10 episodes in its first season, bringing it to our TV screens as a late spring/early summer treat.

The series is based on the best-selling series of novels by Blake Crouch, and is about a mysterious little town called Wayward Pines in Idaho, where everything looks perfect and everyone who enters is never allowed to leave. Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (played by Matt Dillon) ends up in Wayward Pines on his quest to track down two missing federal agents. One of said missing agents is Kate Hewson (played by Carla Gugino), who is also Burke's former lover. Oh, and Burke is also married, so... maybe not exactly a great guy.

The story begins to unfold after Burke gets into car accident and wakes up in the Wayward Pines hospital. Burke's wife gets the call about his accident and she travels to Wayward Pines immediately with their son, to be by her husband's side. That's when things start to get awesome.

With just 10 episodes, we have very little time to get to know all of the quirky and shady townsfolk (played by Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis, Melissa Leo, and Toby Jones). This intense psychological thriller will no doubt have us wrapped around its seemingly perfectly manicured finger well into the hot summer months. And with summer TV's reputation for being less than reliable for endless amounts of fun, Wayward Pines is like a breath of fresh air, that's also chilling and makes every hair on your body stand up.

Every Thursday at 9 p.m., Fox will tuck viewers in with another chapter of the most mysterious, terrifying bedtime story we've ever encountered, and somehow, we won't be able to get enough. Here's to all the nightmares that are sure to follow.
