Kendall Thought Bruce Was Having An Affair

by Julie Alvin

The first part of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians: About Bruce two-part special aired on Sunday night, and it gave viewers a look at how the first family of reality television dealt with revelations about Bruce Jenner's gender identity. The special included words from various members of the family, and Kendall's teary interview revealed that the family once thought Bruce's penchant for dressing like a woman was evidence of him having an extramarital relationship.

"We would find things like makeup and lipstick," Kendall says, "and we thought he was having an affair." They feared their family would be broken up due to infidelity.

Kendall also remembers coming upon Bruce dressed as a woman in the middle of the night once, and expressed sadness that Bruce had to sneak around in order to do something that really made him happy. In response to talk of Bruce fully transitioning into presenting as a woman, Kendall said "I just don't like when people say Bruce is gonna be gone."

Following Bruce's interview with Diane Sawyer on April 24, Kendall tweeted two messages clearly dedicated to her father, saying "I love you" and "so very proud of you, my hero." She also posted a sweet Instagram reiterating her continued support. Her discussion of Bruce on Sunday's Billboard Music Awards red carpet showed more of the same.

She isn't one of the more emotional or effusive Kardashians, but clips from the Bruce special showed an uncharacteristically teary Kendall grabbing a tissue during a conversation with Bruce and Khloe. "He's the most amazing person I know," she says. "I couldn't ask for a better dad. He taught me how to ride a bike and be the tomboy that I am."

Clearly she, and all members of the KUWTK crew, had emotional responses to learning that the person they always knew as their father figure identifies as a woman. But hopefully, in the wake of this news, the Kardashian/Jenner family will grow closer rather than letting Bruce's transition pull them apart. Of the idea that people might mistreat Bruce in light of these revelations, Kendall said "that's more of a worry to me than anything else."

Kendall also spoke about how inspirational Bruce's story could be in his motivational speeches going forward. Hopefully Bruce and his family will do the transgender community a service in publicly showcasing how to be supportive to a loved one dealing with gender dysphoria.

Editor’s Note: Per Jenner’s stated preference, Bustle will continue referring to Jenner using he/his pronouns for the time being. We will follow his lead and make any changes to this policy as needed in the future.
