Cate's Gown Created High Fashion Drama

by Sienna Fantozzi

If there's a fashion venue for high drama, it's definitely the Cannes Film Festival, and Cate Blanchett's Carol premiere dress was certainly one of the most statement making gowns we've seen so far, and brought all kinds of drama — both figuratively and literally. But what else would you expect from Cate the great?

The Cinderella actress attended the premiere at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, and turned heads on the red carpet in a dramatic, midnight blue gown — but surprisingly, it wasn't her first choice. Blanchett admitted to switching her gown for the event at the last minute, opting for the Giles Deacon show stopper made of hand painted silk that was supposed to mirror the sea (appropriate, given the setting on the French Riviera) instead of the Armani dress she was supposed to wear. Though Armani is none too pleased with her decision, I can't say I'm any disappointed. The stunning Giles dress was structured with a full skirt and ruching at the back, and the 46-year-old Australian wore large diamond earrings and her hair in a swept back updo. It was elegant, bold, and definitely a look only worthy of a superstar like Cate Blanchett. Even if it did ruffle up a few feathers.
