Carolina Herrera Sponsors Frida Kahlo Art Show

by Eliza Florendo

Nobody represents eyebrows on fleek more than our girl-crush and painter Frida Kahlo. Most known for her self-portraits that show the female spirit in her own terms, she's become a respected artist that's been celebrated (especially in Mexico) as a national hero. Now, she can add another admirer to her long list—Carolina Herrera will sponsor a Frida Kahlo exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden.

Until November 1, the New York Botanical Garden is hosting the “Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden & Life” exhibit, which will include 14 of Kahlo's works, including paintings and "works on paper featuring botanical images," according to WWD. The exhibit is curated by Adriana Zavala, a Mexican art specialist, and will appear in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library's Art Gallery.

The exhibit will "explore Kahlo's appreciation for the beauty and vastness of the natural world, as evidenced by Casa Azul, her vibrant garden there and the plant imagery in her artwork," according to WWD. To stay true to the atmosphere, the exhibit will also "reimagine" her studio and garden at the Casa Azul in the Enid A. Conservatory.

Pieces featured will include "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird” (1940); “Flower of Life” (1944); “Still Life with Parrot and Flag” (1951), and “Self-Portrait Inside a Sunflower” (1954)." Along with the exhibit, Herrera, who is the sponsor of the NYBG's Conservatory Ball on June 4, has decided on a Frida Kahlo theme for the evening.

Herrera, master of prints and abstracts, has been inspired by Kahlo's use of colors and florals. Herrera told WWD, "Herrera said Frida Kahlo has been a source of inspiration for me; her vibrant use of color, sense of proportion and her whimsical style all her own. It is fantastic to welcome her exquisite paintings to the Botanical Garden.”
