6 Gender-Swapped Movie Remakes We Need To See

by Nick Romano

Thanks to the comedic efforts behind Red Nose Day, we now know what a female-led remake of Indiana Jones and Reservoir Dogs might look like. Anna Kendrick was featured in a sketch replacing Harrison Ford as the gender-swapped Indianna Jones and The Last Crusade, while the cast of Orange Is The New Black starred in Reservoir Bitches . And, hopefully, there are more on the way.

Though these peeps are having some fun at Hollywood's expense, the current climate in the industry speaks to the growing need for more female-led movies and more female filmmaking and writing gigs. Paul Feig's female-led Ghostbusters , starring Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones, stirred the pot quite a bit, and so did the news of a female-driven 22 Jump Street . But there's a lot more work that needs to be done if we ever hope to balance the scales. So, in the spirit of camaraderie, gender equality and hilarious remakes, what other movies should be rebooted with women running the world?

We're already getting a female Expendables called The ExpendaBelles, and the new Terminator Genisys has a strong Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) as a lead ass-kicker. But If we got our way, here are some options to further expand this sub-genre.

The Avengers

Marvel is notorious for featuring predominantly male casts in their movies. We had three Iron Mans and we're getting a third Captain America and Thor. Meanwhile, in the team-ups, folks like Black Widow, Agent Maria Hill and Gamora take the backseat. Marvel should adapt the comic book storyline from Secret Wars that sees an all-female Avengers team arise, involving Storm, She-Hulk, female Thor, Spider-Woman, Dazzler, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch and loads more.

Back to the Future

I know, I know. Remaking Back to the Future with a female lead would ruin your childhood. Not the fact that you spent your entire childhood locked away watching movies instead of going outside and getting sunlight. It's this! You must know that, at some point, this is going to happen, whether it's a remake or an entire reboot or a continuation of some sort. Hollywood will eventually set their sights on this franchise, so why not liven things up with an entirely left field casting choice?

Blade Runner

Hollywood is continuing the Blade Runner saga started by Ridley Scott and his star Harrison Ford with Blade Runner 2. Denis Villeneuve, the guy who directed Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners, is directing Blade Runner 2, and Ryan Gosling will star in the lead role opposite Ford. There's a lot of excitement surrounding this one, and wouldn't casting a female lead instead just cause the biggest chink in this chain?

The Wolf of Wall Street

Rather than watching Leonardo DiCaprio act like a big jerk on screen, with the epic partying, financial laundering, wife-beating and wife-cheating, a woman should play this role. Women rarely get to embody this type of character and, when they do, it usually takes on a whole other meaning. But there's nothing better than watching a member of "the fairer sex" give all mankind a taste of their own anti-hero character trope.

James Bond

Some of Hollywood's efforts to make female-led spy and/or action movies attempt to recreate the magic of the James Bond franchise, but there's no equivalent. At this point, it'll never happen, so there's no need to fret about it. But wouldn't it be something to see? An international woman of mystery traveling all across the globe to stop the worst criminals imaginable, and sleeping with a ton of hot guys along the way. Amazing.

Men in Black

Most of the items on this list are either sci-fi, comic book or action movies, which happen to be the genres lacking the most in strong, believable portrayals of women. And here's another! Men in Black could benefit from something like a gender-swap, which would take the stagnant franchise and give it a fun twist. Men in Black 3 didn't do anyone any favors, so why not try something new?
